Fond Doux Plantation
Fond Doux Plantation (Chauteaubelair, Soufriere) – located towards the west coast of S. Lucia, this is one of the first French estates in the island granted by Louis XIV in the early 1700s (when it was still a French possession). The land within this estate still produces cocoa, citrus, bananas and vegetables – making this, in effect, an eco-tourist site. With the restored 1864 plantation house still functioning, old military ruins and a religious shrine are also found within the estate. Nowadays rooms are being rented out to interested tourists (out of the 12 picturesque cottages on the grounds), along with two restaurants (The Cocoa Pod and Jardin Cacao) offering Caribbean and international cuisine.
